Svyatopolk

In 1015, after the death of Vladimir, the brothers Boris and Gleb were assassinated one after the other by assassins sent by Svyatopolk (c. 980-1019), the eldest son of Vladimir, who was trying to secure power. Their attitude of not resisting but instead waiting for the arrival of the assassins while praying to God is considered to be a typical example of kenōsis (self-emptying), and during the reign of Grand Duke Yaroslav, who succeeded Svyatopolk, the remains of both brothers were reburied together and canonized as saints in the Russian Church. …
