...The Pythagorean theory was later inherited by Euclid (4th-3rd century BC) and Nikomachos (2nd century), and Aristoxenus' theory was inherited by Kleoneidēs (2nd century), but in the 2nd century, Ptolemy put forward his own theory in the form of a compromise between the two schools in his De Harmonia, which was passed on to Boethius. The Greek scale was based on a series of notes called a tetrachord. A tetrachord has a perfect fourth frame and consists of four notes with fixed ends and variable middle notes.
