669/670‐715 Umayyad governor of Khorasan and conqueror of Central Asia. In 705, under the orders of Hajjaj bin Yusuf, governor of Iraq, he crossed the Amu Darya and invaded Central Asia, conquering various cities and reaching Fergana, marking the beginning of the Islamization of Central Asia. With the deaths of Hajjaj bin Yusuf and Walid I, he lost his protector and rebelled against the seventh caliph, Sulayman, but was killed in Fergana by a subordinate loyal to the new caliph.
