Japanese: ツメダニ - つめだに

A general term for mites belonging to the family Cheyletidae of the suborder Protostigmata. Most are free-living and predatory, and emerge secondarily to prey on small mites such as grain mites and dust mites that infest stored food and house dust. In this sense, they may at first glance seem like beneficial insects, but they can be detected as foreign bodies in food and migrate to humans and cause skin rashes. They are 0.2-1.0 mm long and have an oval body that is milky white in color, and are divided into anterior and posterior body sections by a boundary groove. Their palps are well-developed and powerful, with large claws and comb-like hairs at the ends.

前気門亜目ツメダニ科Cheyletidaeに属するダニの総称。大部分が自由生活性かつ捕食性で，貯蔵食品や室内塵に発生したコナダニ類やチリダニ類など小型のダニ類を捕食するために二次的に発生する。この意味から一見益虫のように考えられるが，食品中には異物として検出されたり，ヒトに移行して皮疹を起こしたりする。体長0.2～1.0mm，卵円形の胴部は乳白色を呈し，境界溝によって前胴部と後胴部に区別される。触肢はよく発達して強大で，末端に巨大なつめや櫛（くし）状の毛があるのが特徴。
