Parasitism causes changes in the host's reproductive glands and secondary sexual characteristics, but the degree of change varies, and in many cases the term castration is inappropriate in the true sense of the word. The best known are sacculina castration, which occurs when parasites of the crustacean and long parasites (Cirripedia) parasitize the abdomen of crabs and hermit crabs (Decapoda), and epicalida castration, which occurs when shrimp parasites and crab parasites (Isopoda) parasitize the gills and abdomen of shrimp and crabs (Decapoda).
