A representative painter of the early Italian Renaissance. Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence. He studied under Filippo Lippi, and initially pursued realism under the influence of Verrocchio and Pollaiuolo, but later achieved a poetic and decorative style characterized by beautiful lines and elegant colors. His representative works include "Primavera" (c. 1478, Uffizi Gallery), "The Birth of Venus" (c. 1485, Uffizi Gallery), and "Adoration of the Magi" (c. 1475, Uffizi Gallery). His illustrations for Dante's "Divine Comedy" are a good example of his prowess as a line artist. In his later years, he became a follower of Savonarola and developed a strong tendency towards mysticism, and his last work was "The Mystical Nativity" (National Gallery, London, 1501), which was his last work.

初期イタリア・ルネサンスの代表的画家。本名アレッサンドロ・ディ・マリアーノ・フィリペピAlessandro di Mariano Filipepi。フィレンツェ生れ。フィリッポ・リッピに学び，ベロッキオやポライウオロの影響のもとに初め写実を探究したが，のち美しい線描と優麗な色彩を特徴とする詩的で装飾的な画風に到達。代表的な作品は，《春》（1478年ころ，ウフィツィ美術館蔵），《ビーナスの誕生》（1485年ころ，同館蔵），《三博士の参拝》（1475年ころ，ウフィツィ美術館蔵）など。ダンテの《神曲》に描いたさし絵は線描家としての面目をよく表している。晩年はサボナローラに帰依し，神秘主義的な傾向を強め，1501年の《神秘の降誕》（ロンドン，ナショナル・ギャラリー蔵）を最後に絵筆を絶った。
