A city in the ancient Sumerian region in southern Mesopotamia. The current site name is Fara. It was excavated by a German team in 1902-03 and by a team from the University of Pennsylvania in 1931. It was established in the Jamdat Nasr period at the end of the 4th millennium BC, and its development is thought to have reached its peak in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, at the beginning of the Early Dynastic III period, but fell into ruin after the Third Dynasty of Ur. According to the Sumerian Dynastic Tables, a great flood struck the entire country after the reign of King Ubartutu of Shuruppak. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
