Jiro Sato - Jiro Sato

Japanese: 佐藤次郎 - さとうじろう
Jiro Sato - Jiro Sato

He is one of the greatest players in the history of Japanese tennis. He was born in Gunma Prefecture. He won the All Japan Championship while attending Waseda University. He attracted attention when he defeated Bourgnon, one of the "Four Musketeers of France" who came to Japan in 1929 (Showa 4). That year, France took the Davis Cup from the United States and was on the rise. He participated in the Davis Cup in 1931 and represented Japan until 1934. He reached the semi-finals of the men's singles at the Wimbledon British Championships in 1932 and 1933, and the finals in doubles in 1933. That same year, he was ranked 3rd in the world in the Myers Lawn Tennis Almanac. His bold, courageous, and intelligent tennis, combined with his poker face, overwhelmed his opponents. In 1934 (Showa 9), he disappeared into the Straits of Malacca on April 6th while on his way to participate in the Davis Cup European Zone as captain. It was a suicide prepared to die, and he left a suicide note.
