Earth Uprising

Japanese:
Earth Uprising
Also called "doikki." In the Muromachi period, peasants demanded reductions in taxes and public duties and virtuous government, and launched armed uprisings against the ruling powers, such as manor lords, shugo, and loan sharks such as sake merchants and doso. There were frequent uprisings such as the bashaku ikki, which was participated in by many bashaku (traffic workers), and the tokusei ikki, which demanded virtuous government. The leadership was mainly made up of local samurai and myoshu (village headmen) within the manors. As the myoshu class became smaller lords, the uprisings almost ceased in the 16th century, except for the Ikko ikki, which fought against the feudal lords' control over their territories. The main ones are the Shocho peasant uprising (Tokusei peasant uprising), the Harima peasant uprising, and the Kakitsu peasant uprising (Tokusei peasant uprising). → Uprising → Related topics Obe-sho|Kansho famine|Prohibition|Kokushu|Village system|So|Chikacho-kyoki|Peasant uprising
