Roscellinus

...Odo, Bishop of Campre at the end of the 11th century, defended the doctrine of heredity of original sin, arguing that Adam was a substantial unity of many individuals, and therefore Adam's children were all of the same substance, differing only in nature. On the other hand, Roscellinus, a contemporary of Odo and Abelard's teacher, believed that only particular things exist, and that universals are merely "vox," and came to advocate tritheism rather than a trinity. Abelard somewhat moderated this extreme nominalism, thinking that the universal is the meaning indicated by the meaningful word "sermo" or "nomen," and that it corresponds to "the general vague impression of a particular thing." ...
