…Dayuan first became known in China through a report by Zhang Qian, who was an envoy to the Western Regions during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (reigned 140-87 BC). At that time, Dayuan had over 70 subordinate oases, 60,000 households, and a population of 300,000. It was governed by a king whose seat was Guishan City, and it is said that Dayuan was famous for its fine horses and grapes. Emperor Wu sent an expeditionary force led by Li Guangli to obtain fine horses (blood-sweating horses), but Dayuan temporarily came under the influence of the Han Dynasty, but regained its independence as the Han Dynasty's power declined. …
