A city in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies the lower reaches of the Sakuragawa River, which flows into Nishiura, Lake Kasumigaura, and the surrounding plateaus. The city developed as a castle town of the Tsuchiura Domain in the early modern period, and was a key location for the Rikuzenhama Kaido and water transportation of Lake Kasumigaura, and was a military city after 1920. Although the area of cultivated land is decreasing, the lotus roots along the coast of Lake Kasumigaura are number one in the nation, and the flower production area around the city is one of the leading in the nation. It is located in the center of the southern part of the prefecture, and is connected by the Joban Line and Joban Expressway, and Tsuchiura Station serves as the gateway to Tsukuba City. The food, textile, machinery, and cement industries are thriving, and the development of industrial complexes and residential areas based on the Capital Region Development Plan is progressing. In October, the National Fireworks Competition, known as one of the three major fireworks in Japan, is held, and is crowded with spectators. In February 2006, Niiharu Village, Niiharu District, was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. ^122.89km2 . 143,839 people (2010).

茨城県南部の市。1940年市制。霞ヶ浦西浦に注ぐ桜川の下流域と周辺の台地を占める。市街は近世土浦藩の城下町，陸前浜街道と霞ヶ浦水運の要地として発展，1920年以後軍都でもあった。経営耕地面積は減少しているが，霞ヶ浦沿岸でのレンコンが全国１位，市街地周辺での花卉が全国有数の産地をなしている。県南の中心で，常磐線，常磐自動車道が通じ，土浦駅はつくば市への玄関口の役をなす。食品・繊維・機械・セメント工業が盛んで，首都圏整備計画に基づく工業団地の造成，住宅地化が進展している。10月，日本三大花火といわれる全国花火競技大会が行われ，見物客でにぎわう。2006年２月新治郡新治村を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。122.89km²。14万3839人（2010）。
