Cetinje (English spelling)

The ancient capital of the Republic of Montenegro. Located in the south near the Adriatic Sea. Population 18,749 (2003). At the end of the 15th century, Ivan Crnojivić built a monastery on this high ground (680 meters above sea level) and moved the capital there to escape the Turkish invasion (since the bishop ruled the secular and religious worlds in Montenegro, the monastery also served as the government). As a vestige of the short-lived Kingdom of Montenegro (1878-1918), there are former embassies of Austria, England, Italy, Russia, France, and other countries. There are many things to see here, such as Biljarda, the palace and office of Njegoš, the head of the secular and religious worlds who is also famous for writing the epic poem "Mountains of Glory," his mausoleum on Mount Lovćen (1,600 meters) in the suburbs, the Monastery of St. Peter built in the early 18th century, King Nikola's Palace converted into a museum, and a theater. There are electrical appliance and shoe factories, and a printing company.
