A species of the Nuculidae family that has primitive characteristics among bivalves (illustration). It inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 30 to 1,600 meters from the Boso Peninsula to Kyushu. Its shell is small, 2.3 cm long, 1.6 cm high, and 1 cm bulged, like a clam, but unlike clams, the apex of the shell is at the rear, and the longer edge is at the front. The surface of the shell is covered with a yellow-green skin, and the growth veins are weak. The inside has a strong pearly luster, and there is a spoon-shaped protrusion under the apex of the shell, with a row of small teeth in front and behind it.
