Tekijuku

Japanese: 適塾 - てきじゅく

Its formal name is Tekitekisaijuku. It was a private school that Ogata Koan (pen name Tekitekisai) opened in 1838 while practicing medicine in Kawaramachi, Osaka. In 1843, it moved to Kashomachi (present-day Kitahama 3-chome, Chuo-ku, Osaka). Koan taught a wide range of Western studies to students other than those aspiring to study medicine, and many talented people were trained at the school, including Hashimoto Sanai, Fukuzawa Yukichi, Murata Zoroku (Omura Masujiro), Otori Keisuke, Nagayo Sensai, and Sano Tsunetami.

正式には適々斎塾(てきてきさいじゅく)という。1838年緒方洪庵(おがたこうあん)（号適々斎）が大坂瓦(かわら)町で医業を営むかたわら開いた家塾。1843年過書(かしょ)町（今の大阪市中央区北浜３丁目）に移った。洪庵は医学を志すもの以外にも広く洋学を教えたので，橋本左内，福沢諭吉，村田蔵六(むらたぞうろく)（大村益次郎），大鳥圭介，長与専斎，佐野常民など多くの人材が育った。
