Operating system

A collection of programs designed to process computer work efficiently and continuously and manage the operation of a computer system. It is also called OS for short. It aims to increase the productivity of the entire system by managing the execution of programs and the resources of the computer system, and to increase the productivity of the user by providing functions that are easy for the user to use. An operating system can turn a single machine into one that can be used simultaneously by multiple users, connect to a network to form a distributed system, and utilize the Internet. Examples include MS-DOS, Windows, Mac OS, Unix, Linux, MVS, TRON, and Symbian for mobile phones.

コンピュータによる仕事を能率よく連続的に処理し、コンピュータシステムの運用を管理するためにつくられたプログラムの集まり。略してOSともいう。プログラムの実行およびコンピュータシステムのリソース（資源）を管理することによって、システム全体の生産性を高めること、ならびにユーザー（使用者）の使いやすい機能を用意して、ユーザーの生産性もあわせて高めることを目的とする。オペレーティングシステムによって、1台の機械を何人ものユーザーで同時に使うことができる機械に変えたり、ネットワークに接続し分散システムを構成したり、インターネットを活用したりすることができる。MS-DOS(エムエスドス)、Windows(ウィンドウズ)、Mac OS(マックオーエス)、Unix(ユニックス)、Linux(リナックス)、MVS、TRON(トロン)、携帯電話向けのSymbian(シンビアン)などがある。
