A city in the central-eastern part of Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It is the prefectural capital. It occupies the central-northern part of the Saga Plain and part of the Sefuri Mountains, and is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the prefecture. It flourished as a castle town for the Ryuzoji clan in the Middle Ages and the Nabeshima clan in the Edo period. Creeks have developed in all directions, and the atmosphere of a castle town remains. The castle ruins are now government offices and a school district. The Nagasaki Main Line and Nagasaki Expressway run through the city. The main industries are food, electrical equipment, and metals, but there are no large factories. The proportion of employees in the tertiary industry is high, and it has a strong character as a commercial service city. There are Saga University, Saga Shrine, Obikumayama Kogoishi (historic site), Okuma Shigenobu's former home (historic site), Kawakami Gorge, and Hokuzan Dam. On Mt. Hagane, on the northern border between the prefectures, is the Haganeyama Standard Radio Wave Transmitter Station for radio-controlled clocks. In October 2005, Yamato Town, Fuji Town, and Morotomi Town in Saga County, and Mitsuse Village in Kanzaki County were incorporated. In October 2007, Kawazoe Town, Higashiyoga Town, and Kubota Town in Saga County were incorporated. Area: 431.84 km2 . Population: 237,506 (2010). →Related topics Saga Prefecture | Saga University Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
