Sake from Nagano. In the coldest months of the year, the ice on Lake Suwa cracks and rises. The sake is named after this phenomenon, known locally as "Omiwatari," which marks the path of a god crossing the surface of the lake. There are ginjo, junmai, honjozo, and ordinary varieties. It won gold medals at the National New Sake Tasting Competition in 1995, 2006, 2008, and 2009. The rice used is Miyamanishiki, Hitogokochi, and Shirakabanishiki. The brewing water is from underground water from Mt. Hachibuse. The brewery, Toshimaya, was founded in 1867 and is located in Honmachi, Okaya City.
