Japanese: 通信容量 - つうしんようりょう（英語表記）channel capacity

Generally speaking, this refers to the maximum transmission capacity of information that can be carried over a certain communication channel. In practical communication channels, it is often expressed in terms of the number of telephone or television signal lines that can be accommodated. This is also called line capacity. In addition to this general definition, there is a mathematical definition that expresses the capacity of a communication channel, particularly based on information theory established by CE Shannon in 1948. According to this definition, communication capacity is the information transmission speed achieved when an information-theoretically compatible information source is connected to the communication channel in question.

一般にある通信路で運ぶことのできる情報の最大の伝達能力をいう。実用上の通信路では，電話信号あるいはテレビ信号が何回線収容できるかによって表現することが多い。これを回線容量ともいう。このような一般的定義以外に，とくに1948年にC.E.シャノンによって確立された情報理論による通信路の能力を表す数学的定義がある。この定義に従えば，通信容量は，注目する通信路に情報理論的に整合した情報源を接続したときに達成される情報伝送速度である。
