Damietta
A port city in the northeast of the Nile Delta in northern Egypt. Also known as Damietta. Located about 55 km northwest of Port Said and 13 km from the river mouth. Industries include cotton spinning, silk weaving, and leather. Known since ancient times, it developed during the Islamic Empire. The city was destroyed by the Crusaders in the 13th century. Population: 79,000 (1996).
