A city in the Kurzeme region in western Latvia. Facing the Baltic Sea, it has the port of Liepaja, one of the country's three largest ports. In the Middle Ages, it was called Libau and flourished as a commercial port. A naval port was established in the city by Russian Emperor Alexander II, and it became the home port of the Baltic Fleet. The Baroque-style Holy Trinity Church, built in the late 18th century, is known for its golden altar of the Grand Duke of Courland and the largest pipe organ in the country.
