1670‐1739 (Kanbun 10‐Genbun 4) A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Takashi, and his first pen name was Mincho. His other pen names included Hashinankyo, Gyokeisai, and Gosenso. He was from Zeze, and may have been a chanter at the Hōshō-za. In 1696 (Genroku 9), he went to Edo, where he became a disciple of Zentoku and became a Soin-fu teacher, but he was also close to Kikaku and Giku, both of whom were from the Sho school, and was close to the Edo Sho-fu. As Zentoku's successor, he became a central figure in Edo, promoting a playful, urban style of 100-verse poetry that was rich in human color, and pioneering a new style known as the figurative style. However, in his later years, he was washed away by the waves of the Sho-fu revival, and died in misfortune, as his fellow student Zentoku's Toriyamabiko predicted the extinction of figurative haiku.
