〘Noun〙 (also "chintai") 1. An institution located away from the center that was in charge of local government and military affairs. Also, the military forces stationed there and their commanders. *Joruri, Shin Usuyuki Monogatari (1741), Part 1: "As he was being guided, the chindai of Kyoto, Naritoki of Hojo, came to see the decorations on the palace grounds, his plain robe sleeves pulled close, and he came out to the Shirojoin ." 2. A local administrative office at the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Established in Yamato, Osaka, Hyogo, and Edo in 1868 ( first year of the Meiji era ), these institutions combined administrative, judicial, and military affairs. They were soon abolished and replaced by courts that also held administrative power. ※Grand Governor's Office Proclamation No. 402, May 19, 1868 (Meiji 1) "The Edo Garrison has been _abolished _and the three Magistrates of Temples, Shrines and Towns have been _{_abolished} ." ③ At the beginning of the Meiji era, military corps were established in various regions.
