Naval Commander - Gunkanbugyo

Japanese: 軍艦奉行 - ぐんかんぶぎょう
Naval Commander - Gunkanbugyo

This was a position established during the Edo Shogunate's military reforms at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate period. It was established in February 1859 (Ansei 6) to strengthen the Shogunate navy. It was in charge of the purchase, construction, and training techniques of warships, and in the military reform proposal of 1862 (Bunkyu 2), it was placed seventh in rank, next to the Army Magistrate. Initially it was under the control of the Wakadoshiyori, and after the establishment of the Navy Chief Admiral in 1866 (Keio 2), it came under their control. The official salary was 2,000 koku (later 3,000 koku), and the first person to hold this position was Nagai Naoyuki (also pronounced "Naomune"), who was appointed by the Magistrate of Foreign Affairs. Since then, a total of 15 people have been appointed to this position (including those who were reappointed), including Mizuno Tadanori, Inoue Kiyonao, Kimura Yoshitake (Kaishu), Katsu Yoshikuni (Kaishu), and Oguri Tadamasa.
