A strait that separates the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Its name comes from the voyage of John Cook in 1770, but in Maori it was called Raukawa. It is about 23 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and in the center there is a fast tidal current called Terawhiti Rip. The South Island has a well-developed ria coastline, and is a popular summer resort. There is a regular ferry service between Wellington in the northeast and Picton on the South Island.
