...This is clear from Nichiren's letter called "Reply to Lord Nanjo" dated July 2, 1277 (Kenji 3), which reads, "I have sent five papers for river seaweed and have finished them." As for river seaweed, or freshwater seaweed, "Kefukigusa" (1638) lists "Fuji-moss" from Suruga, "Nikko-moss" from Shimotsuke, and "Kikuchi-moss" from Higo, but the most prized type from the Edo period onwards was Suizenji-nori from Kumamoto, which was also used in soups and vinegared dishes. The general term for dried seaweed was Asakusa-nori from the early Edo period, when seaweed cultivated and harvested around Shinagawa and Omori was commercialized in Asakusa and praised for its high quality.
