In handmade washi paper, the word "chiri" does not mean trash or filth, but refers to the black bark of paper mulberry and other trees, and thick bundles of fibers. For example, the process of removing dust in the papermaking process refers to the removal of the black bark and bundles. Therefore, the original chiri paper was made by filtering the cuticle, epidermis, and black bark of paper mulberry bark that had been removed to scoop high-quality white paper, and the residue and black bark of paper mulberry bark that was not completely crushed appears on the surface of the paper. Also, the paper stock liquid at the end of each day's papermaking process contains a large amount of the chiri removed during the scooping process, and paper filtered with this remaining liquid also becomes chiri paper.
