Located in Kamigamo Motoyama, Kita-ku, Kyoto City. Commonly known as Kamigamo Shrine. Enshrining Kamo Wakeikazuchi-no-kami. An ancient shrine said to have descended and been established on Kamiyama, north-northwest of the main shrine, during the reign of Emperor Jimmu. Since Emperor Kanmu moved the capital to Heian, it has been regarded as the number one guardian deity of the Imperial Family along with Kamo Mioya Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine). It has a Saiin (a shrine where the deity is worshipped) and the Kamo Festival, an imperial festival, is held here, and it was designated as Yamashiro Province's Ichinomiya. Under the Meiji system, it was designated as a government-sponsored taisha (shrine with the support of the government). The main hall and the gonden (temple hall) are national treasures. In 1994, it was registered as a World Heritage Site (World Heritage Site. Kyoto's cultural assets include 17 shrines, temples, and castles, including Kiyomizu-dera). The annual festival on May 15th is famous for the Aoi Matsuri (Aoi Festival).
