A hairstyle for men in the Edo period, in which the hair from the forehead to the top of the head is shaved into a sakayaki (topknot), and the remaining hair is tied up and laid down in front. Although there is no sakayaki (topknot), this style can be seen in sumo wrestlers today. The etymology is thought to come from the resemblance of the character ゝ (chon). Since the Meiji period, it has been called hankami (half hairstyle) in contrast to sankiri (cut), probably because it was a hairstyle in which the hair was left on the lower half of the head.
