George Johnstone Stoney

Irish physicist. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he became a professor at Queen's College, Galway, Ireland in 1852. After conducting research on molecular spectroscopy, he joined the British Association's Committee for the Selection and Naming of Units in 1873. At the association's Belfast conference in 1874, he delivered a report entitled "On the Physical Units of Nature," in which he proposed the idea of ​​the elementary electric charge, and later called it the electron.

アイルランドの物理学者。ダブリンのトリニティ・カレッジ卒業後、1852年ゴールウェー（アイルランド）のクィーンズ・カレッジ教授。分子論的スペクトル研究などを経て、1873年以後、大英科学振興協会の「単位の選択と命名に関する委員会」に参加。1874年同協会ベルファスト大会で「自然の物理的単位について」と題する報告を行い、そのなかで電気素量の考えを提起、のちにそれをエレクトロン（電子）とよぶことが提唱された。
