Fasci Siciliani (English spelling)

A workers' and peasant movement that spread across Sicily in the early 1890s. Due to the economic depression and the introduction of protectionist policies by the government, the economic situation in Sicily had worsened since the end of the 1880s. In response, workers and peasants formed associations called "Workers' Fasci" in both urban and rural areas to demand improvements in their living and working conditions. The first Workers' Fasci was formed in Catania in 1891, and by the end of 1892, there were around 25 Fasci (a term used to describe the state in which similar groups of people are united to form a band or association) throughout the island.
