Senbonyari - Senbonyari

Japanese: センボンヤリ - せんぼんやり
Senbonyari - Senbonyari

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It produces different flower heads in spring and autumn. In spring, the small white flower heads that resemble dandelions open, and when the flowers close the undersides are a pale purple, so it is also called the purple dandelion. The "yari" in its name comes from the fact that the closed flower heads in autumn hang upward at the end of flower stalks that are 30 to 60 centimeters long, likening them to a spear, while the "senbon" refers to the way they grow in clusters. The spring type's flower stalks are short, about 10 centimeters long. It grows on the forest edges of mountainous and hilly areas, and is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Honshu and northern East Asia.
