Cho Ryohitsu

Cho Ryohitsu
1217-1286 A former Chinese politician.
Born in the first year of the Kojo era. Of Jurchen origin. After teaching in Zhaozhou, he was appointed by Kublai Khan (later Emperor Shizu) and played an active role in pacifying southern China. He volunteered to be a diplomatic envoy to Japan. He visited Japan in 1271 and 1272, but was unsuccessful in inviting the Japanese to Japan. He tried to persuade Kublai Khan of the futility and difficulty of invading Japan, but he was not listened to. He died in the 23rd year of the Zhiyuan era. He was 70 years old.

興定元年生まれ。女真族出身。趙州での教授から,フビライ(のちの世祖)に登用されて中国南部の平定などに活躍。志願し日本への国信使となる。文永8年(1271),10年に来日したが,日本招諭に成功しなかった。フビライに日本攻略の無益と困難を説いたが,ききいれられなかった。至元23年死去。70歳。
