Austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 steel (18Cr-8Ni-Fe), were developed in the 1920s, but soon became problematic due to their tendency to crack in high-temperature aqueous solutions containing chloride ions and oxygen. The first conference on stress corrosion cracking was held in 1944, and since then, active research has been conducted into materials that do not suffer from stress corrosion cracking in high-temperature, high-pressure chloride solutions.
