A cold-tolerant perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is a single species in one genus, and is found in southeastern North America. Its Japanese name is also called blue-and-white daisy. The stems are relatively upright, 30-60 cm tall. The basal leaves are stalked, but the stem leaves are stalkless and grow around the stem. The flower heads are tubular, about 10 cm in diameter, and are large and blue-purple, but depending on the variety, they can be pink or white. They flower from June to October, but can also be brought into a greenhouse in early spring and allowed to flower in April or May. They are highly cold-tolerant and can overwinter outdoors. They are easy to cultivate, and grow well in light soil with good drainage. They are propagated by dividing the plant in March or October, but thick roots can also be removed in March or April and planted in shallow boxes. They can also be propagated from seed, but in the case of improved varieties, their characteristics change, so seedlings are not possible.

キク科の耐寒性多年草。1属1種で、北アメリカ南東部に分布する。和名ルリギクともいう。茎は比較的直立性で高さ30～60センチメートル。根出葉は有柄であるが、茎葉は無柄で茎を抱くようにつく。頭状花は管状花からなり、径約10センチメートル、大輪の青紫色であるが、品種により桃色または白色がある。開花期は6～10月であるが、春先に温室へ搬入し、4～5月に開花させることもできる。耐寒性は強く、露地で越冬する。栽培は容易で、水はけのよい軽い土であれば十分生育する。繁殖は3月または10月に株分けするが、3～4月に太めの根をとり、浅い箱などに根伏せしてもよい。実生(みしょう)も可能であるが、改良品種の場合は形質が変化するので、実生は不可能である。
