...(2) In 1943, the Cine Guild was founded by A. Havelock Allan, D. Lean and R. Neame, with Noel Coward as its executive director. The Guild produced films based on Coward's own original stories, such as The Happy Race (1944), The Merry Ghost (1945), and An Encounter with a Woman (1945), as well as other films directed by Lean, such as Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948) and The Friend of the Passionate. (3) From 1946, Gainsborough, run by S. Box who was also a scriptwriter, produced A. Asquith's The Passion (1944), S. Gilliat's Waterloo Street (1945), K. Annakin's The Mermaid (1948), B. Knowles' The Thirty-Six Hours (1949), Margaret Lockwood's The Temptress (1946), The Scarlet Lily (1947), an anthology film based on S. Maugham's novel, and Columbus's Expedition (1949), starring Fredric March, who was invited from Hollywood. Most of the productions were thrillers and melodramas.
