1805‐82 French poet. The day after the July Revolution, he published satirical poems such as "The Contest," "The Disturbance," "The Popularity," and "The Idol." With intense anger and in fierce and powerful verse, he exposed the true nature of the beneficiaries and opportunists of the July Revolution. These were collected in the collection "Iambe" (1831) and shocked the public. He also published many works in various genres, such as the collection "Il Pianto" (1833), which sang of aesthetic lyricism, the collection "Lazare" (1837), which sang of the "suffering and misery" of English workers, translations of Shakespeare, Colerigi, and Boccaccio, and the libretto of Berlioz's failed opera "Benvenuto Cellini." In 1869, he was elected a member of the Académie Française, but declined to receive an audience with the emperor (Napoleon III). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
