A seaweed of the family Gigartinaceae in the order Gigartinales, red algae. It grows in clusters in relatively shallow areas such as on rocks in the intertidal zone and in tide pools. The algae are perichondrial, 1-2 mm wide, with pinnate branches on both edges, and reach a total length of 5-12 cm. They are dark red, but those growing in the shade can be seen to emit a lapis lazuli fluorescent light. They are widely distributed on the coasts of Japan.
