Harvest Dance - Hounenodori

Japanese: 豊年踊 - ほうねんおどり

A type of folk art form, it is danced to give thanks for a good harvest or to pray for a good harvest. There are elegant drum dances, rain-making dances, Bon dances, etc., but in most cases there is no specific repertoire. It may also be called another name for the drum dance. Known examples include the August dance, which is performed in August in the lunar calendar on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, the Satsunan Islands, Okinawa Island, and Tarama Island, and the Hori Festival (Puri) in June in the lunar calendar on the Yaeyama Islands.

民俗芸能の一種で，イネ収穫時の豊年感謝，あるいは豊年祈願の予祝に踊る踊り。風流系の太鼓踊，雨乞踊，盆踊などがあるが，特定の演目をもたない場合が多い。太鼓踊の別称となっている場合もある。鹿児島県大隅半島，薩南諸島，沖縄本島，多良間島で旧歴8月に行う八月踊や，八重山諸島の旧歴6月の穂利祭 (プーリー) で踊られるものなどが知られる。
