Lady Vimalakirti - Idakebunin

Date of birth and death unknown. Queen of Bimbisara, King of Magadha in India during the time of Buddha. Her original Sanskrit name is Vaidehi, meaning a woman (princess) of the Videha people, but she is also known as the princess of Kosala, and her origins are unknown. She was the mother of Ajatashatru (King Ajatasatru), and although there is no record of her life, the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life tells of the "Tragedy of Rajagriha" in which, when Ajatashatru imprisoned his father for murdering him, his wife secretly provided food to the prisoner, which led to her being imprisoned as well. At that time, she prayed to the Buddha (Shakyamuni) and asked him to preach, and it is said that the Buddha first began teachings on the Pure Land here.

生没年不詳。仏陀(ぶっだ)時代の中インドのマガダ国王ビンビサーラの妃(きさき)。サンスクリット語の原名はバイデーヒーVaidehīで、ビデーハ人の女（王女）という意味であるが、コーサラ国の王女ともいい、出自不明。アジャータシャトル（阿闍世(あじゃせ)王）の生母で、事跡はなんら伝えられていないが、『観無量寿経(かんむりょうじゅきょう)』では、アジャータシャトルが父王を殺害するため牢獄(ろうごく)に幽閉したとき、夫人はひそかに食を獄中に給し、自らもまた幽閉されるに至ったという「王舎城(おうしゃじょう)の悲劇」を伝える。そのとき夫人は仏陀（釈迦(しゃか)）を念じ、説法を請い、ここに浄土への教えが、仏陀により初めて開演されたという。
