Blue-and-white flower - Blue-and-white flower

An evergreen shrub of the Plumageceae family (APG classification: Plumageceae). Native to South Africa. When the branches grow well, they become somewhat creeping and branch out a lot. The leaves are alternate, oblong-ovate, about 5 cm long, with kidney-shaped stipules. The flowers form short spikes that bloom one after another from spring to autumn. The calyx is tubular, the corolla is pale blue and divided into five pieces, about 2.5 cm in diameter, and the tube is long and slender. There is a variety that produces white flowers. It is planted in pots for decorative purposes, as well as in flower beds.

It is easy to grow and is usually potted in a greenhouse, but can also be planted in summer flower beds. It is propagated by cuttings or seeds.

イソマツ科（APG分類：イソマツ科）の常緑低木。南アフリカ原産。枝はよく伸びるとややつる状となり、多く分枝する。葉は互生し、長楕円(ちょうだえん)状卵形で長さ約5センチメートル、腎臓(じんぞう)形の托葉(たくよう)がある。花は短い穂状花序をなし、春から秋まで次々に開く。萼(がく)は筒状、花冠は淡青色で5片に分かれており、径2.5センチメートル余りで、筒部は細長い。白色花をつける変種がある。観賞用として鉢植えにするほか、花壇にも植える。

　栽培は容易で、普通、鉢植えにして温室内で行うが、夏の花壇に植え込むのもよい。繁殖は挿木かまたは実生(みしょう)による。
