Le Mans (English spelling)

Japanese: ルマン(英語表記)Le Mans
Le Mans (English spelling)
The capital of the Sarthe department in northwestern France. It is located about 200 km southwest of Paris, near the confluence of the Sarthe River and its tributary, the Huisne River. It developed at the intersection of the road from Normandy to the Loire River and the road connecting Brittany and Paris. The old town, surrounded by Roman walls, spreads out around the beautiful Cathedral of St. Julien (11th to 15th century). In the Middle Ages, it was the capital of the County of Maine. It was the Duchy of Normandy, and became a French territory in 1481. In 1836, the population was only 18,000, but after that, with the construction of the railway, industry developed significantly. Various industries, including electronics, electricity, automobiles, railways, and agricultural machinery, are based here. Agricultural products, cattle, and wine are also distributed here. The endurance race "24 Hours of Le Mans" held every year is famous. Population: 143,547 (2008).
