A multipurpose dam being jointly constructed by Brazil and Paraguay on the Paraná River, which runs along the border between the two countries, will be used primarily for power generation, navigation, irrigation, flood control, fishing, and tourism. The power station will have 18 700,000 kW generators, generating 12.6 million kW of hydroelectric power, the largest in the world. The reservoir is 170 km long, 220 m above sea level at full water, with a reservoir area of 350 km2 and a total storage capacity of 29 billion m3. The dam is 196 m high and 7,744 m long, and has a meandering top to make construction easier. It consists of the main dam, a hollow gravity dam with a bank volume of 11.82 million m3, a rockfill dam with a volume of 16.9 million m3 connected to the left bank of the main dam, and earthfill dams with volumes of 11.8 million m3 at the ends of both banks.
