Asuwa River

Japanese:
Asuwa River

A river that flows through northern Fukui Prefecture. It originates near Mount Kanmuri (1,257 meters) on the border between Fukui and Gifu Prefectures, meanders from south to north through the Echizen Chuo Mountains, then changes course to the west at Miyama Town in Fukui City, flows into the Fukui Plain, and flows east to west through Fukui City, forming a gentle alluvial fan, before joining the Hino River. It is 57 kilometers long. Although the upper reaches are small, they are suitable for hydroelectric power generation, and were one of the first power generation areas in Fukui Prefecture to meet the demand from the Fukui area. The construction of the Asuwa River Dam is planned on the Bugo River, a tributary of the Asuwa River. Before the railway was opened, there was also convenient shipping from Mikuni (now the Mikuni area of Sakai City).
