Although the terms are often used interchangeably, the term encompasses two quite different concepts: (1) Habitat segregation as a phenomenon When two or more closely related organisms with similar lifestyles are distributed in the same geographical area, they often (but not always) live in different habitats. This is common in vertebrates and seed plants, but can also be seen in insects. This phenomenon is called habitat segregation, and the two or more organisms are said to live in separate habitats.
