A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. A samurai of the Fukuoka domain. The second son of Aoyagi Katsutane, a foot soldier of the Fukuoka domain. His first name was Tanemaro, and he was commonly known as Katsuji. He was called Ryuen. He succeeded his father at the age of 13. During the Tenmei era (1781-88), he served in Edo and studied Chinese classics. In 1789, while on another Edo service, he stopped off in Matsusaka and became a disciple of Motoori Norinaga. In Edo, he also interacted with many scholars of Japanese classics, including Koma Moronari and Kato Chikage, and deepened his knowledge. From 1789 onwards, he was taught by Uchiyama Shinryu, mainly through letters. There is an episode in which a copy of over 100 volumes of old books borrowed from various Edo families capsized during sea transport, and he had to copy them again. In 1812, he accompanied Ino Tadataka on a survey of Chikuzen, and on that occasion he presented Tadataka with "Munakata Palace Summary" and "A Summary of the Golden Seal of the Later Han Dynasty." His other works include "Chikuzen no Kuni Zoku Fudoki Shuui," "Border Diary," and "Study on Butchers."

江戸後期の国学者。福岡藩士。福岡藩足軽青柳勝種の次男。初名種麿,通称勝次。柳園と号す。13歳で父の跡を継ぐ。天明年間(1781～88),江戸に祗役し漢学を修め,寛政1(1789)年,再び江戸祗役の途中,松坂に立ち寄り本居宣長に入門,江戸でも狛諸成,加藤千蔭をはじめ多く国学者と交わり学識を深め,同3年以後,内山真竜にも主に書簡を通じて教えを受けている。江戸諸家に借りた百余巻の古書の謄写が海路輸送中転覆し,これを再び謄写し直したというエピソードがある。文化9(1812)年,伊能忠敬の筑前測量に同行し,その縁で『宗像宮略記』『後漢金印略考』を忠敬に献上している。他に『筑前国続風土記拾遺』『防人日記』『屠児考』などの著作がある。
