One of the minority groups widely distributed in southwestern China. Population: 6.58 million (1990). An agricultural and pastoral people who live in the mountainous highlands of Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regions. Currently, the main areas of distribution are the Yi Autonomous Prefectures of Liangshan (Sichuan), Chuxiong (Yunnan), and Honghe (Yunnan), as well as over 10 other Yi Autonomous Counties. The Liangshan region is a large settlement area, and has maintained a relatively pure form with little contact with the surrounding ethnic groups. The name Yi (Yi) is a unified ethnic name adopted after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and was previously called Luo Luo, Nian Zhong, Yijia, and Manzi by the Han Chinese. 中国西南部に広く分布する少数民族の一つ。人口約658万(1990)。雲南省をはじめ四川,貴州各省および広西チワン族自治区の山岳高地に居住する農牧系の民族。現在主要な分布地区としては,涼山(四川),楚雄(雲南),紅河(雲南)の各イ族自治州とその他に10余のイ族自治県がある。なかでも涼山地区は一大聚居地であり,周囲の民族との接触も少なく比較的純粋な姿を保っている。イ(彝)族という名称は,中華人民共和国成立後採用された統一民族名で,かつて漢族から羅羅,倮儸,夷家,蛮子などとよばれていた。
