A bird of the family Columbiformes (illustration). It is found in areas ranging from Europe to India, China, and the Korean Peninsula. In Japan, it is found mainly in Saitama Prefecture on the Kanto Plain, but is also found in Ibaraki, Tochigi, Chiba, and parts of Tokyo. It is a national natural monument known as the Koshigaya Collared Dove, and is the prefectural bird of Saitama Prefecture. Its total length is about 33 cm. Its whole body is pale gray-brown, with a prominent black band on the back of its neck. Both sides of its tail are white, and when viewed from below, the tip of about half of it is white. Its beak is black, and its legs are red. It cries quietly and meekly, "po-po-po-po."

ハト目ハト科の鳥（イラスト）。ヨーロッパからインド，中国，朝鮮半島まで分布している。日本では関東平野の埼玉県を中心に茨城県，栃木県，千葉県，東京都の一部に限って生息する。〈越谷のシラコバト〉として国の天然記念物で，埼玉県の県鳥。全長約33cm。全身淡い灰褐色で，後頸（こうけい）によく目だつ黒帯がある。尾は両側が白く，下から見ると先のほう半分ほどが白い。くちばしは黒く，脚は赤い。ポーポーポポーと静かなおとなしい声で鳴く。
