Born: September 13, 1803, Bergen [died] December 31, 1888, Brighton German thinker and journalist. He became a lecturer at the University of Halle (1832) and published a number of magazines, such as the Hallische Jahrbücher für deutsche Wissenschaft und Kunst, which could be considered the organ of the Hegelian left. However, due to the oppression of the Prussian government, he went into exile in Paris (43). There he became acquainted with Marx and co-published the Deutsch-französische Jahrbücher (44), but he soon fell out with Marx and returned to Germany. During the 1848 revolution, he was active in the Frankfurt National Assembly as a republican and published the magazine Die Reform. After the defeat of the revolution, he went into exile in London and, together with G. Mazzini, organized the European Democratic Committee. After 1850, he continued to write alongside his teaching, but in his later years he turned to nationalism and supported Bismarck.
