Born: September 13, 1803, Bergen
[died] December 31, 1888, Brighton German thinker and journalist. He became a lecturer at the University of Halle (1832) and published a number of magazines, such as the Hallische Jahrbücher für deutsche Wissenschaft und Kunst, which could be considered the organ of the Hegelian left. However, due to the oppression of the Prussian government, he went into exile in Paris (43). There he became acquainted with Marx and co-published the Deutsch-französische Jahrbücher (44), but he soon fell out with Marx and returned to Germany. During the 1848 revolution, he was active in the Frankfurt National Assembly as a republican and published the magazine Die Reform. After the defeat of the revolution, he went into exile in London and, together with G. Mazzini, organized the European Democratic Committee. After 1850, he continued to write alongside his teaching, but in his later years he turned to nationalism and supported Bismarck.

ドイツの思想家，ジャーナリスト。ハレ大学講師となり (1832) ，『ハレ年誌』 Hallische Jahrbücher für deutsche Wissenschaft und Kunstなど，ヘーゲル左派の機関誌ともいうべき雑誌をたびたび刊行したが，プロシア政府の弾圧によりパリに亡命 (43) 。そこでマルクスと知合い，共同で『独仏年誌』 Deutsch-französische Jahrbücherを発行 (44) したが，まもなくマルクスと決裂し，帰国。 1848年革命に際して共和主義者としてフランクフルト国民議会で活躍，雑誌『改革』 Die Reformを発行。革命敗北後ロンドンへ亡命，G.マッツィーニとともにヨーロッパ民主主義委員会を組織し，50年以後教職のかたわら文筆活動を続けたが，晩年は国家主義に転じ，ビスマルクを支持した。
