Dates of birth and death unknown. A man of letters in the mid-Heian period. He was the son of Masatada, grandson of Chunagon Kanesuke, and his mother was the daughter of Udaijin Sadakata. Father of Murasaki Shikibu. He was a close attendant to Emperor Kazan since his days as Crown Prince, but after he became a nun, he was appointed as the governor of Echizen after submitting a petition with a poem (996, Konjaku Monogatari and others). During his post, he exchanged poems with people from Song who had drifted ashore. He was one of the Confucian poets who frequented the residence of Prince Tomohira (Emperor Murakami), and was also fond of waka poetry. Even after Fujiwara no Michinaga took power, he often attended poetry parties, and continued composing poetry after becoming a monk at Miidera Temple (April 1016), but it seems he passed away sometime after January 1018. His poems are collected in "Honcho Reiso" (13 poems), "Ruiju Kudaisho" (five poems), and other works, and four of his waka poems have been included in imperial anthologies such as "Goshuishū".
